Copy paste entire drive or clone?

Hi
I've heard about cloning hard drives when you want to upgrade from an HDD to an SSD, but if i put the old hard drive into a different computer and moved everything onto a new hard drive, then put the new drive back into it's original computer...would that work?
My Brother has a gaming laptop that only has a 250GB HDD, so I told him he could just upgrade to a 1tb HDD or 500GB SSd's aren't too expensive right now. Would I be able to copy his entire old drive onto a new one by putting them into my desktop for the transfer or do you have to do the clone?
